Lesson 4 - Potentiometer (Twist Pot)

A potentiometer is an adjustable resistor that you twist to increase or decrease its value.

Common potentiometers can be in dials, knobs, joysticks, volume control and more.

By measuring the difference in voltage going into the potentiometer and out, the amount the dial has been twisted can be calculated.  From this we can figure out the level or position it is set to.

The typical potentiometer in an Arduino kit looks like this.  It is blue with 3 pins and a dial on top.  The dial has an arrow on it to help indicate what level it has been twisted to.

The resistance value of the Arduino kit potentiometer is 10,000 Ohms or 10k Ohms.
